Packing Services in San Antonio, TX: Full Packing, Partial Packing and Heat-Sensitive Items

Packing is the part of a move that takes longest and gets planned least. A crew may need only hours to load a house, but the boxes it loads took somebody days to fill. In San Antonio there is a second reason to think about it early: for about 122 days of a normal year the temperature reaches 90 degrees or more, and whatever you pack will spend part of moving day inside a closed truck.

This page explains what packing services in San Antonio cover: the difference between full and partial packing, how the way a box was packed affects a damage claim, what should never go on the truck, how to pack for South Texas heat, and what published guides say packing costs. The rules cited come from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and the climate figures from the National Weather Service.

Moving Company San Antonio is a referral service. It does not pack, move or store anything, and it employs no packers. Calls and form requests come to us, and we connect you with an independent local mover that offers packing. The price, the proposal and the work are between you and that mover, as the about page explains.

Full packingBox every room, wrap furniture, label by room and load. You keep out only what travels with you.Large households, tight closing dates, and anyone moving on orders with little notice
Partial packingHandle the rooms or items you name, most often the kitchen, glassware, artwork, mirrors and televisionsPeople happy to box books and clothes but not the breakables
Packing materials onlySupply boxes, paper, tape and wardrobe cartons, and leave the packing to youSmaller moves and tight budgets
UnpackingOpen the boxes at the new address, set contents on counters and shelves, and take away the empty cartons if that is agreedHouseholds that need the kitchen and bedrooms working on the first night

Movers differ in what they include under each heading, so describe the house room by room when you ask for a proposal. In Texas, packing is a service like any other on the move: it has to appear on the written proposal the mover gives you before loading, and that proposal has to state the maximum you could be required to pay. If you decide on moving day to add packing that was not on the proposal, Texas rules require the two of you to agree to that in writing before the extra work is done.

How packing changes what a mover owes you

Who packed a box matters when something inside it arrives broken. FMCSA puts it directly in its guidance for interstate moves: packing your own boxes may reduce your costs, but if the articles you pack are damaged, it may be more difficult to establish a claim against the mover for those boxes. A carton the mover’s own packers filled and sealed leaves less room for argument about how it was packed.

For moves inside Texas, the starting point is the liability level in your contract. TxDMV’s example is a limit of 60 cents per pound per item, and the contract must say so expressly if the mover’s liability is $0.00. Professional packing does not raise that level by itself. If you are paying for packing because you own fragile or costly things, ask in the same conversation what a higher liability level would cost, or whether transit insurance is available.

If you pack your own boxes

TxDMV’s moving checklist gives self-packers three instructions: use appropriate boxes, do not overfill them, and label every box that contains fragile items. Its consumer guidance adds a fourth, to keep fragile items apart from heavy ones. A box that bulges or rattles is the one that gets crushed at the bottom of a stack.

Inventories

An inventory is a written list of what was loaded and what condition it was in. On an interstate move, FMCSA says the mover must prepare one, note any damage or unusual wear, and have both of you sign every page. On a move within Texas an inventory is optional and TxDMV warns that a mover may charge for it, though a mover that draws one up for its own use, without agreeing it with you, may not bill you for it. If one is prepared, it should be signed by you and the mover before and after the move, and TxDMV advises walking with the mover while it is taken, because inventories are often used in the claims process. The department’s simplest advice costs nothing: photograph your furniture before anyone touches it.

Articles of high value

On interstate moves, a mover may limit its responsibility for items worth more than $100 per pound, such as jewelry, china or furs, unless you list them specifically on the shipping documents. Tell the packers about such items before they are wrapped, and get them written down.

What should not go into a box on the truck

  • Valuables, medications and important papers. TxDMV says not to load these on the truck at all, and that the mover is not responsible for them. Passports, deeds, prescriptions and jewelry ride with you.
  • Hazardous or perishable items. FMCSA warns that packing perishable, dangerous or hazardous materials in your household goods without the mover’s knowledge can limit the mover’s liability. Ask the mover for its list of things it will not carry.
  • What you need in the first two days. If the packers come a day or more ahead of the truck, the clothing, medication and documents you will need first should be packed by you and kept with you.

Packing for San Antonio heat

The National Weather Service’s normals for San Antonio put the average high at 92.4 degrees in June, 94.9 in July, 96.0 in August and 90.1 in September. Over 1991 to 2020 the city averaged 18 days a year at 100 degrees or above, and in 2023 it logged 75. On September 5, 2000 it reached 111 degrees. Unless a mover tells you its truck is climate-controlled, assume the cargo area is not cooled: it stands in that weather with the door open for hours, and then the door is shut.

Anything that softens, warps, leaks or spoils on the dashboard of a parked car can do the same in the truck. Sort those things out before the packers arrive.

Kind of itemWhy heat is a problemWhat to do
Candles, crayons, cosmetics, chocolate and pantry itemsThey can melt or spoil, and what melts can ruin whatever is boxed with itCarry them in your own air-conditioned car or use them up before the move
Records, tapes and photographsThe Library of Congress advises keeping recordings and photographs cool, away from heat sources and out of strong lightStand records on edge, keep photographs together in a box of their own, and move them yourself if you can
Phones, laptops and anything with a rechargeable batteryApple, for one, says temperatures above 95 degrees can permanently damage battery capacity in its devicesKeep laptops, tablets and cameras with you, and ask about original boxes for televisions
MedicationsMedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine’s health site, says heat can damage medicines and advises against keeping them in a car’s glove compartmentNever on the truck, in any weather. Carry them in the cooled cabin of your car
HouseplantsA closed, uncooled truck is no place for a living plantMove them in your car on the last trip, and ask whether the mover takes plants at all

Timing helps as much as sorting. Ask for the earliest start the mover offers in the hot months, so the truck is loaded and moving before mid-afternoon. On a local move, have the air conditioning running at the new address before the truck arrives. On a long distance move, or one that includes storage, ask where the load will sit and for how long. The long distance movers page covers moves that spend more than a day on the road.

Rain is the other half of the forecast

San Antonio’s normal rainfall is 32.38 inches a year, and it does not arrive evenly. May is the wettest month at 4.40 inches, followed by September at 3.88 and October at 3.75. If your move is booked in one of those months, ask whether mattresses and upholstered furniture will be bagged or wrapped, and keep a few flattened cartons to lay over the entry floor.

How a packing job usually runs

  1. The walk-through. In person or by video, the mover looks at each room, the closets, the garage and anything fragile or oversized. This is when packing gets written onto the proposal, room by room or as a whole house.
  2. Your own sorting. Before the packers come, set aside what travels with you: documents, medications, valuables, chargers, a few days of clothes, and everything on the heat list above. Put it in one closet or in your car and tell the crew that space is off limits.
  3. Packing. Packers work a room at a time, wrapping breakables in paper, filling cartons and labeling each one with its room. If an inventory was agreed, it is written up as they go, and you should be on hand to see the condition notes.
  4. Loading. Boxes and padded furniture go onto the truck, with the things you will need first loaded last.
  5. The other end. Boxes are set in the rooms on their labels. If unpacking is on the proposal, cartons are opened and emptied, and the empties are hauled off if that was agreed.

If the load has to wait

Sometimes the new address is not ready when the truck is. Texas rules say that if a shipment cannot be delivered in the agreed period and the mover is not at fault, the mover may place it in storage and charge the storage fees its contract allows. In San Antonio that raises a packing question as well as a money question: ask where stored goods are kept and whether the space is cooled, and pack heat-sensitive things on the assumption that it may not be.

What published guides say packing costs

We do not set prices or quote them. A mover prices packing from what it sees at the walk-through, and HomeAdvisor says movers base packing estimates on the number of rooms and the total square footage. Two published reference points may help you judge a proposal.

  • HomeAdvisor’s national cost guide, updated June 17, 2026, says packing services cost around $1,000 on average, in a range of $270 to $2,200, and that loading, unloading and unpacking are charged on top.
  • moveBuddha, a moving marketplace, says on its San Antonio cost page, last updated October 7, 2026, that professional packing adds $455 for a one-bedroom home and up to $4,550 for four or five bedrooms.

Neither figure is a quote, and neither comes from the movers we connect you with. What you pay is the amount on a mover’s written proposal. Each Texas mover files a tariff with TxDMV listing all of its rates and charges, and the department’s checklist tells customers to ask for a copy, because those are the maximum rates the mover may charge. Ask where packing labor and materials appear in it. For the bigger picture on cost, see the cheap moving company page.

Packing and a military move

Service members at Joint Base San Antonio who arrange their own move as a Personally Procured Move should know how packing is treated. The military’s Personal Property Activity lists packing materials such as boxes, tape and pads, and the hiring of professional movers or packers, among authorized operating expenses, and tells members to keep receipts for all of them. Payment rests on certified weight tickets, so packed weight counts: what you box and ship is what gets weighed. The counseling step and the payment rules are summarized on the long distance movers page. This site has no connection with the military, and your Personal Property Office has the final word.

Questions to ask a mover about packing

  • Is packing priced by the hour, by the box or as a fixed figure, and where is that on the proposal?
  • Are boxes, paper and tape included or billed as used?
  • Which rooms and items are covered, and which are not?
  • Who packs: the same crew that loads, or a separate one on a separate day?
  • What liability level applies to boxes your packers fill, and what would a higher level cost?
  • Will you prepare an inventory, and is there a charge for it?
  • What will you not carry?
  • Is unpacking included, and do you take the empty cartons away?
  • What is your TxDMV certificate number?

That last question is the one to check before any of the others matter. The moving company page shows how to look a certificate up in TxDMV’s Truck Stop, and the local movers page covers the rest of a move inside the city.

Questions, answered

What do packing services include?

It depends on the mover and on what you ask for. Full packing covers every room, with boxes labeled and furniture wrapped. Partial packing covers the rooms or items you name, often the kitchen and breakables. Some movers also sell materials only, and some offer unpacking. Whatever is agreed should be listed on the written proposal you receive before loading.

How much do packing services cost in San Antonio?

No price is set here: the real figure is the one on a mover’s written proposal. As published reference points, HomeAdvisor’s national guide, updated June 17, 2026, says packing services average around $1,000 in a range of $270 to $2,200, and moveBuddha’s San Antonio cost page, last updated October 7, 2026, says professional packing adds $455 for a one-bedroom home and up to $4,550 for four or five bedrooms.

Is a mover responsible for boxes I packed myself?

It is harder to hold one responsible. FMCSA says that if articles you packed are damaged, it may be more difficult to establish your claim against the mover for those boxes. On a move within Texas, what the mover owes is set by the liability level in your contract, which can be as low as the two of you agree.

What should I keep off the moving truck?

TxDMV says valuables, medications and important papers should not be loaded, and that the mover is not responsible for them. FMCSA adds that packing perishable, dangerous or hazardous materials without the mover’s knowledge can limit the mover’s liability. In San Antonio’s heat, also keep anything that melts, warps or spoils in your own car.

How hot does it get on a San Antonio moving day?

National Weather Service normals show average highs of 92.4 degrees in June, 94.9 in July, 96.0 in August and 90.1 in September, with about 122 days a year at 90 or above. On September 5, 2000 the city reached 111 degrees. Ask for an early start in those months.

Do movers make an inventory when they pack?

On an interstate move the mover must prepare an inventory and both of you sign each page. On a move within Texas an inventory is optional and the mover may charge for it. If one is made, TxDMV advises going through the house with the mover while it is taken and signing it before and after the move.

Can packing costs be counted on a military PPM?

The Personal Property Activity lists packing materials and the hiring of professional movers or packers among authorized operating expenses for a Personally Procured Move, and says to keep receipts. Rules differ by service and situation, so confirm with your Personal Property Office before you spend.

Does Moving Company San Antonio pack my home?

No. Moving Company San Antonio is a referral service and does no packing or moving. It connects you with an independent local mover that offers packing. That mover gives the proposal and does the work, and you decide whether to hire it.
